Since the start of its business use in 1993, our country's Internet has spread rapidly with broadband emerging in 2002 and expanding to currently cover more than 60% of the homes in Japan.
In particular, in recent years, the Internet has supported economic and social activities such as on-line shopping, trading, and auctions, as well as becoming a platform for the distribution of music and video. Even the telephone network has begun to move toward an all IP (Internet Protocol) infrastructure.
At the same time, ADSL ?based television in Europe, and DSL and wireless broadband in China and other Asian countries is also spreading rapidly.
It is now commonly agreed on a global level that the increasing speed of consumption of IPv4 address space - the fundamental resource of our current Internet ? will lead to an exhaustion of IPv4 addresses sometime around 2011.
